You’ll be equipped to coach all types of clients in real-world settings

You’ll gain access to job resources, alumni communities & further education pathways

The Stage 3 practical exam takes place during a 3-day intensive training camp and is designed to assess your real-world readiness to work as a fully qualified Personal Trainer.

This final stage goes beyond theory — it's about showing that you can apply your knowledge in a live setting, lead real sessions, make decisions, and guide clients safely and effectively.

Participation Requirements

To pass this practical evaluation, each student must actively:

  • Observe real-time sessions and instructor demonstrations
  • Participate in physical training activities and group tasks
  • Lead various components of a session, including assessments and instruction

These three elements — observation, participation, and instruction — are essential for mastering the craft of personal training.

Practical Exam Format

Your exam is divided into structured segments. Each is designed to simulate the key responsibilities of a personal trainer:

1. Initial Consultation & Assessment

  • Introduce yourself as a personal trainer
  • Conduct an interview and screening session with a client
  • Perform a postural assessment and movement screening
  • Explain the structure and purpose of the training session (oral component)

 2. Warm-Up & Mobility Phase

  • Select appropriate warm-up exercises for the client’s goals
  • Demonstrate correct range of motion and warm-up technique
  • Include joint mobility work relevant to the session
  • Ensure the intensity matches the planned workout

  1. Main Session: Strength, Conditioning, and Coaching Skills

You will be required to:

  • Present and teach 6–8 exercises effectively
  • For 3 selected exercises, present 2 advanced methods (e.g. pyramid sets, isometric training, supersets, GVT, cheated reps)
  • Provide alternative exercise options for 3 exercises, showcasing adaptability
  • Deliver clear instructions, correct form, and ensure safety throughout
  • Identify and correct client errors with appropriate teaching points

 4. Cardio Training Component

  • Lead a cardiovascular session using equipment such as a bike, treadmill, rower, or cross-trainer
  • Cover machine setup, demonstration, technique correction, and intensity management
  • Apply interval training and progression strategies

5. Cool-Down & Flexibility Work

  • Guide a static stretching routine covering key muscle groups
  • Emphasise proper form, timing, and muscle engagement
  • Deliver clear cues and corrections throughout

One-on-One Session with Examiner

To complete your evaluation, you will conduct a full mini-session with your assessor, including:

  • Client introduction and needs analysis
  • Warm-up and mobility integration
  • Nine equipment-based exercises, with full demonstration and teaching
  • Cool-down and static stretching

Assessment Outcome

You will be evaluated on:

  • Technical execution
  • Communication and coaching skills
  • Client safety and progression
  • Professionalism and session structure

Full participation and successful demonstration of skills are required to pass Stage 3 and receive your International Practical Assessment of Personal Trainer Certificate.

After completing all components of the 3-day practical camp and fulfilling all participation and performance criteria, you will be awarded the:

International Practical Assessment of Personal Trainer Certificate

This certificate confirms your ability to deliver safe, effective, and professional personal training sessions in a live environment. It is the final step toward full qualification as a globally recognised personal trainer.

  • What This Certification Confirms:
  • You can confidently lead clients through full training sessions
  • You are capable of individualised programme delivery, from warm-up to cool-down
  • You understand how to assess, instruct, correct, and motivate
  • You can use a wide variety of training methods, tools, and coaching strategies
  • You demonstrate strong communication, safety awareness, and client focus

To receive this certificate, you must:

  • Attend all 3 days of the final practical camp

  • Successfully complete a 1:1 assessment session with your examiner
  • Pass all required teaching segments, including:
